ACCOMPLISHMENTS: In its first three years of operation (2006-2008) KEF has:
- Funded food for a daily meal to 1,300 students, cooked at school by volunteers ($16,000 per year or $12.50 per student-year)
- Started a high school scholarship; 51 students now in the program ($200 to $300 per student-year depending on the school attended).
- Started a teacher's college scholarship program, currently funding 6 student-teachers ($600 per student-year)
- Funded in-service teacher training for 7 teachers and 7 teacher aides @ $600 per year for a 1-week course.
- Funded the opening of a kindergarten class of 200 children staffed by a qualified teacher and two aides; for a significant reduction of class size of the first grade.
- Funded construction of a 2-classroom school building ($14,000 with 160,000 bricks made by parents)
- Funded construction of a 12,500 sq.ft. Community Center/Kindergarten ($19,600 with 200,000 bricks made by parents).
- Funded repair of a water well at the school.
- Funded repair of three teacher's homesĀ ($700 each) and three school buildings. ($500 each)
- Started a microcredit program with $1,900 financing 3 clubs of 35 businesses. 160 individual businesses now await an additional $4,425 for a total of $7,425, for an average loan of $46 per business.
- Provided school uniforms to 317 orphans and impoverished students ($1,300); soccer uniforms and shoes for school and community teams (no cost since all were donations).
- Shipped 4,000 text books and school supplies from the US to Malawi (US DOD covered shipping)
- Organized local committees in Malawi to manage the KEF programs.
