Malawi is known as “The Warm Heart of Africa” because Malawians are a happy, hospitable and gentle people. Multiple ethnicities, languages and religions coexist peacefully. Small land-locked Malawi is located in South-Eastern Africa between Zambia, Tanzania and Mozambique. It borders the very long Lake Nyasa (Lake Malawi) (see map). It is the size of the American state of Ohio. It has a population of approximately 13 million. It has three official languages including English. Because it is a former English colony, English is its language of higher learning.
In Malawi there is one qualified teacher for every 95 pupils, compared to one for every 20-40 pupils in America. The literacy rate for Malawian men is 60%, 50% for women. In 1994 the government established free elementary school education but the resulting overcrowded classrooms has lowered the quality of education; and high school is still not free. Many children are barred from higher education because they lack English-language skills. That’s because the great majority grows up learning another language, one of 14 in Malawi. |
