Malawi
  • Poor and Overpopulated:
Malawi is one of the ten poorest countries in the world with an income per person of around $160 per year: 230 times less than the average American income ($36,764 in 2002). Although Malawi's population (13 Million) is more than twice the size of Scotland's, and its land area is around 50% larger, its economy is less than 2% of the size of Scotland's ($1.8 Billion vs. $139 Billion in 2003).
A 2004 estimate puts the poverty rate at 53% of the population. And the population is growing rapidly: more than half of it is less than 15 years old.
  • Dramatically Poor Health:
With only one doctor for 118,000 persons in 2002, Malawi is the country with the fewest doctors per person in the world.
The country suffers from one of the worst HIV/AIDS epidemics in the world with 14% of its population infected; at over one million persons infected this is more than in Europe and North America combined; AIDS accounts for 84,000 death per year and the majority of 400,000 orphans. Life expectancy at birth has fallen from around 45 years in 1990 to around 37 years today: it’s less than half of the life expectancy of the average American (78). On healthcare Malawi's government only = spends $12 on average per person each year. Children under the age of five are 27 times more likely to die than those in an average Western European country.
