The eight villages supported by KEF are located in Southern Malawi, 31 miles from the city of Zomba of population 100,000.
The local language is Chichewa aka Chewa of the Bantu language family spoken by some 7,000,000 people in Malawi as well as in some neighboring countries. Most children are introduced to English while in school, a language essential for their access to education.
The local economy is based on subsistence farming. Periodical droughts and insufficient government assistance bring famine. A typical farm is less than one acre. There is neither electricity nor running water. The toilet is a latrine with no septic tank. The villages are reachable by a dirt road that becomes impassable during the 4 months of the rainy season.
