Funding of food program
Funding of food supplies for the daily meals has been provided for 2009 and part of 2010 by fund raising efforts of groups in Atlanta, GA and Reno, NV.
Lower the student/teacher ratio
The current student/teacher ratio averages 144-to-one for the school of 1,300 students and is very grade-level dependent; from 38-to-one in 8th grade to a staggering 182-to-one in 1st grade (counting both the teacher’s aide and the teacher). KEF is working to improve this critical imbalance by means of recruiting and training additional teachers. The Ministry of Education will provide 3 teachers once KEF constructs 3 homes for them.
Adequate classrooms
A 2-classroom building was built with 160,000 bricks made by the villagers ($14,000). Thirty six (36) desks, were built locally and installed in classrooms ($1,305). A Community Center was built with 200,000 bricks made by the villagers; it now accommodates the kindergarten classes and serves as the Prayer House for all 8 villages ($19,200). The European Union has committed to finance another 2-classroom building in 2009.
Financial help for all high school students: High school is not free in Malawi. High schools are remote to the villages and the “Day School” variety does not provide room and board. KEF now provides scholarships and stipends to all 51 high school students from Manyesa ($6,600 in 2009; their number increased impressively from 2 in 2006, to 21 in 2008, to 51 in 2009.
